A New Hallmark Plot, Finally!
While many Hallmark fans enjoyed Butlers in Love, many expressed disinterest in this movie.
No matter what side of the fence you're on, we can all agree that it is refreshing for Hallmark to finally think outside the box to create a story that's a little different from the rest. It might still follow the formula, but the variables are more unique.
You may have even learned a few things you didn't know about buttling, so you can tell your family that Hallmark movies are educational! Who knew there is such a thing as a "perfect wine pour." The correct method is holding the bottle from the bottom. I've never held the bottle at the bottom to pour, have you? I think we need to practice (and taste test!) this technique a LOT.
Do You Agree with Emma's or Henry's Perspective?
Emma has been preparing for buttling since childhood, with the TV drama, Plumshire Manor, giving her somewhat of a romanticized vision of the occupation.
For Emma, earning a six-to-seven figure salary while attending dignitaries, monarchs, and politicians sounds like a dream come true. Landing the right position would put her around some of the most important people in the world. She finds this glamorous.
Emma loves serving because she takes great satisfaction in making lives better for other people.
Henry, meanwhile, feels the pressure of family history. He descends from a long line of butlers spanning over 200 years. His parents are adamant he will continue the tradition, even though his passion is for cooking.
Henry's view of buttling is a little more realistic. Butlers sacrifice their own lives and happiness to serve someone else for a lifetime. When charged with taking care of people around the clock, there is little time off to create a life for oneself. Butlers have to retain an air of authority, which means they can't become chummy with the family they are serving or the rest of the staff, or they might risk being fired.
If you had the qualifications to be a butler, would you enjoy rubbing elbows with influential people while earning a hefty income, or would you be inclined to make a life for yourself, like Henry wants to do?
Most Relatable Moment
A lot of us can do a task repeatedly and flawlessly until someone scrutinizes us as we do it. Some people work better under pressure while others become nervous and error-prone.
Emma panics and blanks under pressure. Henry helps her work through this, noting the trick is to get out of her head and live in the moment. Point taken!
A Couple Oddities
In real life, Stacey Farber (Emma) is 34 and Corey Cott (Henry) is almost 32. Both of their characters still live at home and are trying to settle on the right career path. What is happening?
Charles Willoughby has a remarkable and spotless reputation. He writes a letter of recommendation for Emma, which, along with the good word put in from Henry's father, helps her land a highfaluting job in Scotland. She works for two seconds before quitting. If you're old-school, you'll remember the days when you never thought of quitting after someone put their reputation on the line for you. Where is the respect and honor? If real-life at all parallels the Hallmark universe, we're in trouble. Are young people now too self-involved to consider how their flippant attitudes about work affect others? Poor Charles Willoughby and Mr. Walker!
As Emma drives away from the Scottish estate, she finds Henry walking along the road, on his way to find her. How far has he been walking? The land area of Scotland is 30,090 square miles. This is a little weird.
Either way, they reunite is a jobless couple but soon wind up right where they want to be.
